Diet For Ibs

High fiber diet to help IBS?
Hi,
I am 16 years old, female, 5′5″ and 135 pounds. I need to lose like 10-15 pounds to feel healthy. I have IBS and I have been experiencing symptoms for about 2 years now. I have also gained like 15 pounds in the last two years. My GI told me to go on a high fiber lifestyle/diet, what are some good meal plans and meal ideas for this? Also, I am very active, so what are some ideas to lose weight on this diet.
i eat very healthy. lots of fruits and veggies. why should you avoid bananas with IBS?
I am on a low glycemic diet and I have lost almost 30 pounds since January.
As far as what you should eat you should really discuss this with your doctor. I don’t want to give you bad instructions
I will tell you what has helped me because I have metabollic syndrome and IBS both are from a poor diet
I eat whole grain breads, cereals and snacks
I avoid pasta including rice
I avoid chips and fried foods
I was told not to eat bananas
I drink a lot of water
Avoid juices with added sugars.
eat fresh fruits and veggis
avoid frozen foods and snacks
that is a diet that is rich in fiber and that will help you lose weight as well
Again, I do encourage you to talk to YOUR doctor to make sure it is a good diet for YOU

Symptoms Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

How to alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?
I know that eating a diet high in fiber helps. But are there any other ways that I can help my symptoms? I don’t necessarily have any trigger foods because I’ll get the stomach cramps/diarrhea regardless of what I eat or whether I eat and everything seems to feel the same. So if you have any tips to deal with it, then please share.
An old but effective remedy is to smoke half a cigarette in the morning and the other half at night. No more, no less. It’s been used ages. Most doctors don’t tell you about it (smoking is bad, lol) but my friend said it made the difference between him being miserable all the time and just having the occasional flair.

Ibs Relief

can IBS be cured??????????/?
i am just 18 year old gal….has been diagnosed ibs.loose motions for past 4 months medicines taken give me just temorarly relief i mean i get ok but after a week or so the process starts again…am i doomed to live life like this…all friends party outside have great food and actully doctor has advised me strict no cheese and milk…how long does it take to get treated i am quite unhappy withh my condition!!!
controlling the diet and emotional stress usually relieves the symptoms.
Diet
Increasing the fibre in the diet often helps, although sometimes a decrease in fibre is needed. Eating smaller meals more often helps.
The doctor may ask for a food diary to be maintained to see if eating a particular food, for example, milk or cabbage worsens the symptoms.
Stress
The doctor will help identify things that cause stress and will suggest ways to help control them. Relaxation techniques may help manage stress.
Medicines
The doctor may prescribe a combination of bulk-forming agents (such as methylcellulose), antispasmodic drugs, and tranquilizers or antidepressants.
As IBS is a chronic disorder, symptoms may flare-up throughout life. Although a cure has not been found yet, the disorder can usually be controlled. IBS will not progress to anything worse like cancer.
Following these guidelines help relieve you:
Learning stress-management techniques to reduce stress and anxiety. Professional counselling may be helpful.
Drinking six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
Avoiding alcohol, which can make symptoms of IBS worse.
Selecting foods carefully. If a food appears to bring on symptoms, avoid it. Be sure that a food produces symptoms several times before you give it up. You should try to keep many different foods in your diet because a varied diet provides better nutrition.
Ask your doctor if you should have a high-fibre diet, especially if you tend to be constipated. High-fibre foods may cause gas and bloating, but usually these symptoms lessen as the digestive tract gets used to the increased fibre. Some high-fibre foods include:
whole-grain breads and cereals
fruits, especially apricots, blackberries, coconut, peaches, pears, pineapple, and strawberries
nuts, especially almonds, pistachios, and walnuts
vegetables, particularly sprouts, corn, popcorn, beans
eat smaller meals more frequently. Eat smaller portions of foods at a meal.

Ibs Treatment

What is better for IBS, orthodox treatments or holistic therapies?
i really need help with this, so if you can answer a.s.a.p that will be great thank you!! =]
I use a mixture of both. I use ant-spasmodic drugs to help the pain and anti diarrhea tablets if I have to. However the frequency that I have to take these meds has decreased since I started eating pro-biotic yogurt every day and drinking peppermint tea regularly. I have also started eating more organic food and using fresh ingredients in my cooking.
I don’t think either is better- just whatever works for the individual is best.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Foods

I have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, what can i do to improve the situation?
What food should I avoid?I get diarreha more than constipation…It’s driving me mad! Please help! Thanks
avoid fibre or try cutting gluton/wheat and milk out your diet.
i’m dangerously allergic to gluton/wheat and nuts, and can’t stomach anything with milk in so it’s a pain in the asshole trying to shop. but you get used to it, use trial and error to cut certain things out your diet and you can buy tonics to build up your immune system for the fluids you lose.
good luck x

Remedies For Ibs
Ultracet/Tramadol for pain. I get debilitating pain from IBS. Would this be a good pain reliever?
Vicodin works but I’m concerned about it being habit forming. The doc prescribed Hycosymine. It makes me very tired and does not ease the pain.
I eat very carefully and use homeopathic remedies but when the severe pain hits I need something stronger.
Any info would be appreciated.
Hi…you raise such an important point, which I’ll rant about for a second before addressing the specific problem. For background I had major surgery over a decade ago, suffered severe nerve damage during it, and have had severe pain since. To say pain management is a topic I know well is one of the biggest understatements I could make. So on to some of what I learned.
You worry about medication being “habit forming.” In pain management there is a HUGE difference between your body becoming dependant on a medication (which will happen to everyone taking such medication) and “addiction” as we see all over the TV and news. The odds of a person with legitimate pain that is properly diagnosed taking narcotics and becoming addicted is less than 1%!! When a person taking drugs for recreational purposes, they get a euphoria or high feeling, which is why they get addicted. When a person has pain the medication works on the pain and that euphoria doesn’t exist. You may feel lethargic or have some side affects when first starting a medication, but if you are being properly medicated then that will never happen. I could write pages on why it is far more important to properly medicate pain (from quality of life, to overall better health, to more complicated but serious situation of once a body learns chronic pain it is almost impossible to unlearn it, and many more). Sadly Hollywood looking for hot storylines and celebs looking for excuses have done major damage IMHO to people really understanding all this. I know in the beginning that was me, I bit the bullet and I likely have much more pain for the rest of my life as I let it snowball and until I was in so much pain I couldn’t function and my nervous system learned to misfire furiously and continuously.
Anyway back to you. Another misconception my Pain Specialist (one of the top in the world and n one of the few that deserves that title) educated me about is how it’s not right to view medications as “stronger,” “more powerful,” etc. I know I have had better sucess combining medications which are considered “weaker” than when I take continuously “strong” medication.
If you are not seeing one I would STRONGLY suggest you find a board certified Pain Management specialist. They will work with you to try different medications to find what works best for you. Likely you will end up with a baseline medication and another medication for “break through pain” when the first medication isn’t handling the pain. Very importantly they will know what medications are likely to be more effective for your issue, and start there.
Also they should know (and this does vary with quality of MD) other medications that remove symptoms if need be. IE they might prescribe Provigal to keep you alert, or Tigan to remove nausea. If a medication is effectively taking care of your pain, and you can’t find another one that works as well without the side effects, then it is worth adding medications like this so you overall quality of life is better.
And of course all you can do to alter your lifestyle to prevent flare-ups the better. But since I’m not a pro on IBS I’ll leave that to those who know.
You might feel better doing some reading on pain management–I know I was very concerned about addiction until I read several documented reasons why it is safe. I’ll try to find the bookmarks to the sites that let you search for legit pain management specialists (not sure if they all are board certified so never hurts to ask) across the country. The sites are also great resources. Will add this info shortly.
Best of luck with this!!!

Probably the best resource for locating a pain specialist. For MD click Patient and you’ll see various options for locating local MD’s.

Ibs Irritable Bowel

What are symptoms associated with IBS, Irritable bowel syndrome?
The other night I had excrutiating stomach cramps. I felt like I had gas too but I couldn’t pass it. I had nausea and vomitted once (that made the cramps better). I did not have diarrhea. The cramps started out mild and progressed to very bad within two hours and lasted about 3 hours after that. This happened once before a year ago and I went to the ER thinking it was my appendix. After being tested for a ct scan for appendix and ovaries, the ER doc sent me home with a diagnosis of cramps with no named cause and a prescription of bentyl. I had some pills left so I took one and I guess it helped becuase my cramps went away. This was two nights ago. I have only had mild cramps (like a dull pain that moves around, not always in the same place) If the cramps come back I plan on making an appointment. I want to ask the doc all the right questions. Does it sound like it could be IBS so I can inquire about it?
That sounds like IBS. My unle, two aunts, cousin and my close friend all have this problem. They will start out feeling gassy, but it won’t pass and then they get a bloated feeling, finally they have the diarrhea and then they get really constipated for a few days and not even fiber or laxatives will make the problem completely go away. I’d ask the doctor if she can schedule for the test for it.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diet

My wife has IBS and has tried deleting coffee, gum, booze et al from her diet to no avail any new treatments??
IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diet, habits,
As a pharmacists with IBS, I can tell you that fiber is the most important thing to look at. It can correct the constipating kind AND diarrhea kind of IBS. Stay away from cheese and laxatives(except for bulk fiber laxatives, such as Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, and Fibercon)
If considering medications, you have to know which form of IBS she has. There are new medications for the constipating kind, such as Zelnorm and Lotronex(not recommended), as well as very old medications for the diarrhea kind of IBS, such as dicyclomine, Immodium, and about 20 other medications.
